TOPEKA, Kan. - The Newman baseball team watched a 4-0 lead disappear in just two innings, and suffered is first non-conference loss in a 10-4 decision to Washburn Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field in Topeka. Eight Newman pitchers combined to give up 17 hits in the loss.
Newman (11-6) opened its scoring with a
Tyler Hancock solo bomb over the left field fence that gave the Jets a 1-0 lead. A pair of Washburn (3-3) errors, combined with a
David Longmore single contributed to two more runs in the fourth. Longmore's single led-off the inning, then advanced to third on back-to-back Ichabod errors in an attempt to retire
Corey Cowan. After
Tyler Hancock was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Longmore scored when
Ruben Marrero grounded out to third.
Jarrod Flax followed suit with a third-base ground-out of his own that pushed Cowan across the plate. After four innings, the Jets held a 3-0 lead.
Refusing to settle, Newman added another run in the fifth.
Ben Wagner opened the inning with a double down the left-field line. A
Tanner Vinson walk, combined with a Terrel Brown bunt single loaded the bases for Longmore, who sent Wagner home on an RBI fielder's choice, and gave the visiting Jets what felt like a comfortable 4-0 lead with four innings remaining.
But the Ichabods refused to go quietly on their home turf. Washburn managed a run in the fifth, then exploded for five more in the sixth, and stole all the momentum in the process. The Ichabods added four more runs in the eighth to seal the deal, and sent the Jets back to Wichita with a 10-4 loss.
Six different batters combined for Newman's six hits in the contest.
David Longmore made the most of his time offensively, finishing 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Gage Daniels was hit with his first loss of the season, allowing a pair of earned runs on three hits without recording an out in the sixth inning. Starter Anthony Gonzales pitched three shut-out innings, before being replaced by
Mikey Lack, who held the Ichabods to just one run on two hits in two innings of work.
Washburn's Trent Speaker was credited with the win.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 11-6 on the season. They will return to action Friday, hosting Cameron in the first of a four-game non-conference series at McCarthy Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
