WICHITA -
Jordan Ollenberger kept his hot streak alive, as the Newman baseball team split a Heartland Conference doubleheader with Texas A&M International Friday afternoon at McCarthy Field. Ollenberger went 5-for-8 with a run and an RBI in the split.
Game 1 - Newman 4, TAMIU 3
Newman (22-13, 16-12 Heartland) went straight to work in Friday's opener. With two outs in the bottom of the first,
Tyler Hancock singled to center, then moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt. Hancock went on to score on
Corey Cowan's single to left-center. After walking to follow Hancock,
Ruben Marrero scored on an attempt to retire Cowan, who stole second. After the first inning, Newman held a 2-0 lead.
Texas A&M International (19-19, 12-16 Heartland) answered with a pair of runs in the third, but the Jets produced an answer in the third.
Jarrod Flax opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Flax moved to third when Hancock flied out to right, then scored on a balk by TAMIU starter Jerry Hawkins to give the Jets a 3-2 lead.
The Jets added another run in the fourth.
Jordan Ollenberger opened the frame with a single to left, then moved to second on
Ben Wagner's single to center. A double steal moved both Ollenberger and Wagner, and
Tanner Vinson's sacrifice fly pushed Ollenberger across the plate.
TAMIU threatened to come back in the seventh, but
Gage Daniels refused to surrender the lead, and picked up his 11th save of the season.
Jarrod Flax and
Ben Wagner each recorded multi-hits for the Jets. Flax finished 2-for-4 with a run, while Wagner went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Newman starter
Kyle Burkhardt allowed two earned runs on 11 hits with a walk and four strikeouts in six innings of work, and improved to 5-4 on the season.
Game 2 - TAMIU 11, Newman 4
An error-filled first inning gave way to a pitcher's duel through the middle innings, but a five-run seventh helped Texas A&M International (20-19, 13-16 Heartland) pull away for the big win.
TAMIU took a 3-0 lead after its first at bat, but Newman (22-14, 16-13 Heartland) answered in its half of the opening frame.
Tanner Vinson opened the inning by reaching on a fielding error at short stop, then moved to second when
Tyler Hancock reached via fielding error at second base.
Ruben Marrero's single through the right side scored Vinson, and pushed Hancock to third. A
Corey Cowan double to right-center scored Hancock and moved Marrero to third. A fielder's choice by
David Longmore plated Marrero, and tied the game at 3-3 after the opening inning.
Neither team scored until TAMIU plated a run in the fourth. After two more scoreless innings, the visiting Dustdevils blew the game open in the seventh, plating five runs on five hits, all with two outs, to take a 9-3 lead.
Newman notched a run in the eighth, but a pair of Dustdevil runs in the ninth put the nail in Newman's coffin, and TAMIU salvaged the split with the 11-4 win.
Jordan Ollenberger finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI to lead Newman's offense.
Corey Cowan and
Ruben Marrero also recorded multi-hit games. Cowan finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Marrero went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Newman starter
Jacob Furr allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in just four innings of work, and fell to 4-3 on the season.
With the split, the Jets fall to 22-14 on the season, and 16-13 in Heartland Conference play. The series concludes Saturday with the first pitch slated for noon at McCarthy Field.
