Riverhawks Sweep Baseball

TAHLEQUAH, Okla.- The Newman baseball team was swept at Northeastern State on Sunday, falling 7-6 and 11-2 at Rousey Field.

Game 1: 
Newman (27-17) started the game off fast, plating the games' first runs in the first inning. Ben Wagner led the game off by getting plunked by a pitch, and advanced to third on a Terell Brown single to left field. A Tyler Hancock double plated Wagner and Brown to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Hancock stole third during Ruben Marrero's at-bat, and Marrero's single scored Hancock, to give the Jets a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the inning.
Northeastern State (24-24) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Newman rallied in the top of the second. Following Tanner Vinson's line-out, Ben Wagner singled to right field and advanced to third on Tyler Hancock's single to right field. Ruben Marrero struck again with a single to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error, which scored both Wagner and Hancock, to give Newman a 5-2 lead.
The Riverhawks responded with single runs in the second and fourth innings, combined with a three-run outburst in the third to take a 7-5 lead.
The Jets tried to rally in their last at-bat of the game. Terrell Brown led the inning off with a triple, and scored on a Corey Cowan single to center, but Jordan Ollenberger's ground-out to the pitcher ended the game in a 7-6 defeat.
Ruben Marrero led the Newman offense, batting 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Game 2:
Northeastern State (25-24) wasted little time scoring in the series finale. The Riverhawks used three-run innings in the first and second frames to take an early 6-0 lead.
Newman (27-18) rallied in the third inning. Tanner Vinson led the inning off by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop, and stole second to get into scoring position. Ben Wagner reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to get Vinson to third. Ruben Marrero's fielder's choice plated Vinson, and advanced Wagner to third. Corey Cowan's single to left field scored Wagner, and cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Riverhawks added to their lead with two runs in the third and fifth innings, and added a single run in the sixth to cap off the 11-2 victory. 
Newman returns to action next Friday, when they travel to Arkansas-Fort Smith for its final Heartland Conference series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
