WICHITA – The Newman basketball teams host Fort Hays State on Tuesday (Nov. 25) in its Twinkle, Twinkle Night of Stars game. The doubleheader starts at 5:30 p.m. with the Lady Jets, and the Jets follow at 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Video, live stats and radio at KGSO 1410 AM are available for the games.
Twinkle, Twinkle Night of Stars will help families served by Saint Francis Community Services and their Christmas for Kids Campaign. The first 500 fans get a free t-shirt.
Donate a new basketball, baseball or other sports item that will go towards Saint Francis Community Services' Christmas for Kids campaign. Monetary donations will also be accepted with the Newman cheer and dance team going through the stands during timeouts. All donations will go toward the Christmas for Kids campaign.
The Newman women's basketball team starts the night with its game at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Jets are currently 2-1 after going 1-1 at the Lady Miner Classic. NU lost to No. 20 Central Missouri, 60-47, on Friday (Nov. 21). The Lady Jets got back on track with a 57-47 win over LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday (Nov. 22).
Fort Hays State women's team is currently 3-1. They started the season with a 71-65 win over Bemidji State at the Radisson Roseville Classic, but suffered their first loss of the season the next day by the score of 70-68 to Concordia-St. Paul. In their most recent games, the Lady Tigers rolled to wins over McPherson College and Cameron in Hays, Kan. Forward Kate Lehman leads the team with 22.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game. Jill Fix adds 14.3 points per game.
On the men's side, the Jets are 2-0 with two wins over Kansas MIAA foes Emporia State and Washburn. The Jets defeated ESU on Tuesday (Nov. 18), 86-80. NU pulled out to a 90-79 victory over WU on Thursday (Nov. 20). The Jets also took on Wichita State in an exhibition game on Sunday (Nov. 23) where the No. 11 Shockers won 105-57. Newcomer
Reggie Baker leads the Jets, averaging 24.5 points per game. He scored 30 points on Washburn in the win.
The Tigers are 2-2 and have won back-to-back home games over NAIA opponents. FHSU started the season with two losses. They fell, 86-83, to Upper Iowa and then lost to Minnesota State-Moorhead, 83-71. Both games were played in Maryville, Mo. After the losses, the Tigers doubled up Central Christian College (Kan.), 84-42, in Hays. On Saturday (Nov. 22), FHSU won 103-54 over Bethel College. Craig Nicholson, a Northwest High School product, averages 14.8 points per game and has a team-high 25 assists in four games.
