Cold Shooting Dooms NU in CBS Sports Game

Box Score WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team shot a season-low 27.9 percent in a 66-57 loss to Dallas Baptist on Saturday (Feb. 22) at Fugate Gymnasium. Playing on CBS Sports Network, the Jets dropped to 9-16 and 6-11 in the Heartland Conference. With the loss, NU is eliminated from making the Heartland Conference Tournament.
 
In the first half, the Jets pulled out to a 26-20 advantage, their largest of the half on a layup from Marquis Cuyler at the 3:12 mark. NU led 30-26 at the break.
 
The Patriots started the second half with a 15-6 run to open up a 41-36 lead at the 14:02 mark after a 3-pointer from Myles Johnson.
 
After tying the score at 43-43 with two Elhad Emerlahu free throws, Ryan McCarthy put NU up 45-43 with a layup after Emerllahu's shot was blocked. Cuyler made one free throw at 10:04 for a 46-43 score.
 
DBU responded with a 13-0 run in the next 4:24 to open up a 56-46 lead with 5:40 left. The Jets cut the deficit to four after a steal and made layup from Perryonte Smith made it 60-56 with 42 seconds on the clock, but the Patriots made their free throws in the final 35 seconds, going 6-for-6 for the final 66-57 score.
 
In the second half, the Jets shot only 19.4 percent (6-31), including 0-for-10 from 3-point range. For the game, NU went 17-of-61 (27.9 percent) and 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from 3.
 
DBU shot 50 percent (13-26) in the second half, including 55.6 percent (5-9) from 3-point range. The Patriots finished shooting 43.4 percent from the field. Johnson scored 20 points, including four 3s. Remy Ndiaye totaled nine points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
 
Emerllahu scored a team-high 17 points and added a team-high seven rebounds. Cuyler totaled 12 points and Espinoza scored 11 points.
 
The Jets played in front of a capacity crowd of 1,242 at Fugate Gymnasium. The game was aired on CBS Sports Network, the Jets first appearance on national television.
 
The Jets end their regular season on Thursday (Feb. 27) against Oklahoma Christian at 7:30 p.m. in Fugate Gymnasium.
