Jets Look for Fourth Straight Win Tonight at UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Newman men's basketball team looks to extend its winning streak to four games tonight (Jan. 22) at UA Fort Smith at the Stubblefield Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The Jets are in the middle of the Heartland Conference standings with a 4-4 record.
 
NU has won three straight conference games after an 88-75 victory over Dallas Baptist on Monday (Jan. 19). The Jets defeated Oklahoma Christian last Thursday (Jan. 15) by the score of 72-62, and they started the streak of wins with a 95-77 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 10 at Fugate Gymnasium. In the win over DBU on Monday, junior guard Reggie Baker scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down a Newman NCAA Division II school record 17 rebounds. The junior from Avon Park, Fla. is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Jets at 19.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Four other Jets average double figures in points. Senior Jeremy Espinoza pours in 13.2 points and adds 6.1 rebounds per game. James Pegues has an 11.8 scoring average and pulls down 5.1 rebounds per game. Point guard Cortrael Colbert averages a team-high 5.6 assists and scores 11.9 points per game. Ryan McCarthy, a senior from Wichita, scores 10.1 points per game.
 
The Lions are currently 8-8 and 4-4 in the Heartland Conference. UAFS has won three of its last four games, including two straight home contests. The Lions fell in their most recent game, 71-63, at Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Jan. 17). Seth Youngblood averages a team-high 17.6 points per game. He is a 45.1 percent 3-point shooter. DeVaunta Thomas adds 12.6 points per game, and Alex Cooper scores 12.2 points per game. Also averaging double figures is Dusan Stojanovic at 11 points per game.
 
UAFS has a four-game winning streak in the series. In the two teams' most recent meeting on Feb. 20, 2014, UAFS won in overtime by the score of 95-91 in Fort Smith, Ark.
 
The Jets travel to Rogers State on Saturday (Jan. 24) for a 3 p.m. game in Claremore, Okla.
