Baseball Downs Hilltoppers, 2-0, to Win Series

AUSTIN, Texas - The Newman baseball team won its first Heartland Conference series of the season with a 2-0 win over St. Edward's Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field in Austin, Texas. Jacob Furr surrendered just five hits while pitching seven shut-out innings in the win.

St. Edward's (2-4, 2-3 Heartland) tried its hand at small ball in the opening inning of Sunday's contest, opening with back-to-back bunts to put a runner in scoring position with just one out, but Newman starter Jacob Furr was unphased, and retired the next two batters to end the threat.

The game remained a scoreless-tie into the fourth inning when Newman (2-4, 2-4 Heartland) made its move. David Longmore singled to shortstop as the second batter of the inning, then advanced to third when Ruben Marrero reached on a fielding error by the Hilltopper third baseman. Another fielding error, this time at first base, allowed both Longmore and Marrero to score, and gave the Jets a 2-0 lead with five innings to play.

Furr allowed just one hit over the next three Hilltopper at-bats, and handed the game over to Gage Daniels with two innings remaining. Daniels surrendered just one hit, a single to second, over the next two innings, and picked up his second save of the season as Newman held on for the 2-0 win.

Tyler Hancock led Newman's offensive charge, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate. Longmore, Terrell Brown and Corey Cowan were responsible for Newman's other hits.

Starter Jacob Furr held the Hilltoppers at bay, allowing just five hits while recording four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of shutout baseball while improving to 1-1 on the season. Gage Daniels relieved Furr, and allowed just one hit with a walk and a strikeout in two innings of work while earning his second save of the season.

With the win, the Jets improve to 2-4 on the season, with an identical 2-4 record in Heartland Conference play. Newman will return to action Friday, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State in its home opener. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. at historic McCarthy Field.
