WICHITA - The Newman baseball team added four more wins to its resume with a four-game sweep of Cameron Friday and Saturday at McCarthy Field in Wichita.
Gage Daniels notched saves in three of those four games.
Game 1: Newman 5, Cameron 4
Cameron (11-7) held a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning, and appeared to be in control of Friday's opener, but Newman (12-6) refused to lose on its home turf. The Jets recorded their first run of the game in the fifth, when
Tanner Vinson was hit by a pitch, then moved to third on a Terrel Brown single. Vinson eventually scored on
David Longmore's fielder's choice, and the Jets were on the board.
Newman completed its comeback bid in the sixth. The Jets rode three hits and two Aggie errors to plate four runs.
Ben Wagner plated the game winner on an RBI single from Vinson, and broke the 4-4 tie.
Gage Daniels then shut down the Aggies in the final inning, and picked up his first save of the series.
Christian Dye led the Jets offenseively, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate. Starter
Kyle Burkhardt threw six of the seven innings in the game, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits during that time.
Game 2: Newman 8, Cameron 3
Cameron (11-8) plated a pair of runs in top of the first inning. Newman (13-6) countered with a run of its own in the opening frame.
Tanner Vinson opened the inning with a walk, then eventually scored on and RBI single from
Corey Cowan.
Newman tied the game in the fourth when
Ruben Marrero singled through the left side, then moved to second on a fielding error by the Cameron centerfielder. Marrero moved to third on a Jerrod Flax single , then scored on
Jordan Ollenberger's fielder's choice, tying the game at 2-2.
The Jets took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but Cameron responded with a sixth-inning run to force a 3-3 tie late in the game.
Newman erased any doubt in the sixth. Marrero singled to open the inning, and forced Cameron starter Wade Myatt out of the game in favor of Mike Carlson, who immediately surrendered three-straight singles that plated a pair of runs. Gage Daniels retired each of the three batters he faced in the final seventh inning, and the Jets picked up the win.
Jerrod Flax finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored to lead Newman's offense. Starter
Brandon Droge pitched six complete innings, allowing three runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts in a winning effort.
Game 3: Newman 7, Cameron 5
Newman (14-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, and was never seriously threatened. Cameron recorded a pair of runs in the fourth, and narrowed the margin to 3-2, but the Jets pushed three runs across the plate in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
Cameron (11-9) plated two more runs in the fifth, and another in the sixth, but Newman never surrendered the lead en route to the -5 win.
Ruben Marrero finished a team-best 2-for-3 with wo runs scored in Saturday's opener.
Anthony Gonzalez pitched 4.2 innings for the Jets, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Gage Daniels pitched the final inning, allowing just one hit on his way to his seventh save of the season.
Game 4: Newman 5, Cameron 4
Newman (15-6) plated a pair of runs in the second, and took an early 2-0 lead. Cameron (11-10) answered with a two-run fourth inning, and sent the game into the fifth inning tied at 2-2.
The Aggies took their first lead of the game with a solo run in the fifth, but the Jets were unphased. With two outs in the inning,
David Longmore and
Corey Cowan notched back-to-back singles. A
Tyler Hancock walk loaded the bases for
Ruben Marrero, whose single to shortstop tied the game at 3-3. Jerrod Flax followed with a single through the left side that plated two more runs. With two innings remaining, the Jets held a 5-3 lead.
Cameron scored a run in the sixth, but could never take the lead, and Newman completed the four-game sweep with a 5-4 win.
Ruben Marrero and
Jordan Ollenberger each finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored to lead the Newman offense.
James Hilts picked up his first win of the season, pitching one inning in relief of starter
Ashton Hoffman, and allowing one earned run on two hits in that time.
After the four-game sweep, Newman improves to 15-6 on the season. They will return to action Friday, hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
