About the Jets...
Newman will look to stay within striking distance of the second seed in the Heartland Conference tournament when Texas A&M International visits Wichita for a three-game series. The Jets took two-out-of-three games from the Dustdevils on Feb. 24-25. Newman comes into this weekend's series on a four-game winning streak, dating back to a 2-1 victory at Emporia State on April 3. Five Jets have pushed their batting average over .300 on the season (Ollenberger, Marrero, Flax, Hancock, and Wagner), led by Jordan Ollenburger's .364 average. Gage Daniels has been automatic when the game is on the line, notching 11 saves on the season.
Scouting TAMIU...
The Dustdevils storm into McCarthy Field having won six out of their last seven games, including a series victory over fourth place Arkansas-Fort Smith. Austin Voros and Jaron Shimmel have led the TAMIU offense, batting .313 and .304, respectively. Voros is leading the team in home runs (2) and runs batted in (22). Marty Bigham and Danny Navarro have held opponents in check, combining for a 2.03 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 79.2 innings of work.
Last Time Out...
The Newman baseball team maintained the third seed in the Heartland Conference standings after a three-game sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State last weekend, 17-9, 6-2, and 19-5.
Game 1:
Game Notes:
-The Jets pounded the ball early and often, forcing OPSU's starter Sean Williams out of the game before he could complete the first inning.
- A Shannon Engroff single to right field with the bases loaded gave Newman a 6-0 lead.
-Tanner Vinson plated Engroff on an RBI double, and scored on a Jerrod Flax single. Flax scored on a Tyler Hancock double that gave the Jets a 9-0 lead after half an inning.
-Newman scored one single run in the second, and five more runs in the third inning to jump out to a 15-0 lead.
-The Aggies finally scored in the third, and posted back-to-back three-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to pull to within 15-8, but the Jets put the game out of reach with two runs in the seventh, en route to a 17-9 win.
Game 2:
Game Notes:
-Newman scored the games first run in Friday's finale, when Corey Cowna opened the second inning with a single to left, and advanced to third on David Longmore's single up the middle. Longmore stole second to give the Jets a pair of runners in scoring position, and a Jordan Ollenberger walk loaded the bases. Jerrod Flax's fielder's choice retired Ollenberger, but plated Cowan.
-An attempt to catch a stealing Flax went aray, and allowed Longmore to score to give Newman a 2-0 lead.
-OPSU notched a solo home run in the third, but Newman answered with solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings ot take a 4-1 lead.
-The score remained 4-1 until the eighth inning. Ollengerger doubled to left field with one out, and scored on a double to right off the bat of Ben Wagner. Shannon Engroff's single plated Wagner, and gave the Jets a 6-1 advantage.
-The Aggies scored one more run, but the Jets claimed the 6-2 victory.
Game 3:
Game Notes:
-After two scoreless innings, Newman produced a pair of runs in the third.
-OPSU answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame, but the Jets blew the game open in the fifth. David Longmore was hit by a pitch with two outs, and advanced to second on a Jordan Ollenberger single. A Ben Wagner single pushed Longmore across the plate, and Jerrod Flax's walk loaded the bases for Tanner Vinson, who hit the pitch into the 40 mph wind, and over the left-centerfield fence for a grand slam. Vinson's third home run of the season gave the Jets a 9-1 lead.
-The Aggies countered with two runs in the fifth, but Newman answered with two more runs in the sixth, and pushed its lead to 11-3.
-Tyler Hancock sent a pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run, but the Jets notched just three hits in the inning, and took advantage of four walks, two hit batsmen, and a fielding error to plate eight Newman runs, and gave the Jets a 19-3 lead after seven innings.
-OPSU scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but couldn't endure the 10-run rule out of play, and Newman cruised ot a 19-5 win.
