The Match-Up
About the Jets...
Newman continues its break from Heartland Conference play on Saturday, when they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to take on the Northeastern State Riverhawks. The Jets are coming off of an 18-8 loss on Tuesday to Emporia State, but clinched a spot in the Heartland Conference Tournament for the first time in school history, following a series victory at Texas-Permian Basin last weekend. Five Jets have pushed their batting average over the .300 mark on the season. Jordan Ollenberger (.372 avg) has only been rung up 14 times in 78 at-bats this season. Ruben Marrero (.355 avg) leads the team in hits with 49. Ben Wagner (.315 avg) has stolen seven bases on 10 attempts. Tyler Hancock (.311 avg) leads the team with five home runs and 29 runs batted in. Corey Cowan (.301 avg) leads the team with 20 walks on the season.

The Jets' pitching staff owns a 4.76 team earned run average on the season. Senior Gage Daniels is currently for the top spot in the nation in saves (13). The Creighton transfer has struck out 29 batters in 32.1 innings of work on the season. Seniors Kyle Burkhardt and Brandon Droge are tied for the team lead in strikeouts on the season with 52. Jacob Furr has the best ERA out of all of the weekend starting staff, sporting a 2.93 earned run average.

Scouting Northeastern State...
The Riverhawks enter Saturday's series with a record of 22-23 in their transitional year, before joining the MIAA next season. NSU features a lineup with four hitters batting over .300, led by Trent Wilkins' and Chris Gallegos' .338 averages.  Gallegos leads the team with five home runs and 42 runs batted in on the season. As a team, the Riverhawks have hit 80 doubles and 13 triples.

The pitching staff is led by Cowley County transfer, Craig George. The Muskogee, Okla. native possesses a 3.57 ERA, while striking out 34 batters. George has also logged the most innings out of any Riverhawk, having pitched 58.0 innings in 11 appearances.

Last Time Out...

The Newman baseball team dropped its game on Tuesday at McCarthy Field, losing 18-8 against non-conference rival Emporia State.

Game Notes:
-Emporia State scored a single run in the first, followed by three more in the second, before a five-run inning gave the Hornets a 9-0 lead.

-Newman fought back in the third. Tanner Vinson opened the inning with asingle to left field, and moved to second on a wild pitch. A Tyler Hancock single scored Vinson, and moved to second on an error. Ruben Marrero followed suit with a single that scored Hancock. After a Corey Cowan walk, David Longmore doubled to left-center that plated Marrero and Cowan. The final blow came after a Jordan Ollenberger single that scored Longmore, and cut the deficit to 9-5.

-The Hornets repeated the same sequence from the first three innings in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Emporia State scored a single run in the fourth, three more in the fifth, before a devistating five-run inning in the sixth put the Hornets up 18-5. The Jets' three-run fifth inning wasn't enough, as Emporia State stomped its way to a 18-8 run-rule victory.

-Tyler Hancock hit a game-best 4-for-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Tanner Vinson had the only other multi-hit game for the Jets, batting 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
