HEATING UP
The Jets are winners of 5 out of their last 6 and are scratching and clawing their way back to the .500 mark both overall and in MIAA play. The Jets have won back to back series with wins over Fort Hays State in the midweek series, and a 2-1 series win vs Northwest. The Jets earned their first series win in the Northwest series when losing game 2. Newman then faced 2 midweek matchups in Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central and earned wins in both of them to gain momentum heading into the series vs Emporia State, a team that sits in 9th place and a game back of the 7th place Jets.

This Saturday's game vs Emporia State is Senior Day for Jake Angelico, Zack Stewart, Anthony Ferrante, Jenner Steele, Tyler Hamill, Justin Durnill, Nate Denniston, Andrew Prieve, Hayden VanDePol, Carson Hawks, Anthony Ferrante, Asher Finke, and Ian Lecki. We thank them for their time at Newman and all of the hard work and dedication they have put into this program.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Jets cruised to a 10-0 eight inning win in the midweek matchup vs East Central. The pitching staff held ECU to just 2 hits and earned their 1st shutout victory of the season. Brycen Schoenhofer earned his 2nd win of the season. The Jets offense put up 13 hits on the afternoon with Joe Kinneberg going 3-3 at the plate. MEET YOUR COACHES
Drew Maus is in his 4th season as head coach of the Jets. His 2022 campaign saw the Jets post their best record since the 2016 SEASON, finishing 23-23 and 1 game shy of making the MIAA tournament for the first time ever. 2022 SCHEDULE

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 14-21 and 8-12 in the MIAA heading into the series vs Newman. The Hornets currently sit in 9th place in the MIAA standings and are a game behind the 7th place Jets. The Hornets have lost their last 2 MIAA series, getting swept on the road by Missouri Southern and defeated at home 2 games to 1 against Rogers State.
 
Emporia State has just 2 hitters batting aver .300. The offense ranks last in the MIAA and is led by Chandler Bloomer at .316 with 31 hits in 30 games played. Noah Geekie has started in 32 games for ESU and is batting .313 with 25 hits. The team's 39 home runs ranks 6th in the MIAA but their hit totals rank 11th in the MIAA (286 hits).

THE HOME RUN CHASE
McGuire vs Sosa? How about Steele vs Stewart vs Angelico? Jenner Steele broke the Newman single season home run record this past Sunday vs Northwest with his 11th home run of the season. Not even 3 days later Zack Stewart tied Steele by hitting 2 home runs in the win over Southeastern Oklahoma State to earn his 10th and 11th home runs of the season. Jake Angelico has hit 5 home runs in his last 5 games to bring his total to 10 this year.
 
The Jets rank 3rd in the MIAA in home runs with 48, and Steele, Stewart, and Angelico combine for 32 of those 48.

SWINGING IT
The Jets offense ranks 2nd in the MIAA in average (.328). They're 3rd in hits, 3rd in RBI'S, and are 3rd in runs. They put together a streak of 4 games where they mercy ruled their opponents a few weeks ago. Newman has mercy ruled 7 opponents this season.

THE 300 CLUB
6 different Jets are batting .300+ (they meet the minimum requirement) heading into the series with the Hornet. Jenner Steele leads the team with a .414 average and 11 home runs. Jake Angelico, Eli Wohl, Jason Schneider, Jack Kiser, and Shawn Marquis are all in the club.

ANGEL(ico)S IN THE OUTFIELD
Jake Angelico has started in 35 games for the Jets. The senior out of New Braunfels, Texas earned MIAA Hitter of The Week in week 1 for his 6 hit, 10 RBI performance, the first MIAA AOW for Baseball in Newman history.
Angelico is batting .394 with 52 hits, 9 doubles, 2 triples and 5 home runs to go along with a team leading 54 RBI's. Jake had one of the most impressive weeks of the season, going 10 for 16 with 3 4 home runs and hit for the cycle in the series against Northwest to walk it off in game 3 to clinch the series victory over NW Missouri.

Eli Wohl (JR/Ponca City, OK) is 39 for 105  this season in 33 starts in his first season as a member of the Jets. The transfer from Cowley CC is 11-12 on stolen bases. Wohl has 3 home runs this season.
 
HAY HAYDEN
Hayden VanDePoll is here to stay. The graduate student has posted a .307 career batting average for the Jets and looks to replicate and top last season's .317 season where he started 46 games and belted 7 home runs with 38 RBI's. 
Hayden had an excellent performance in the game vs UCO last Friday, going 2-3 with 2 huge triples in the 5-1 win.

MAKING HIS MARQ IN RIGHT FIELD
Shawn Marquis is batting .333 with 35 hits and a home run in 27 starts and 30 appearances. Marquis is 12 for 13 on stolen bases and was a key figure in the Jets 2-0 shutout over No. 21 Rogers State. Marquis made 2 SportsCenter top 10 worthy diving plays, one that doubled up a man on second base to keep the shutout in tact ending the inning. Marquis went on a 7 at bat hit streak after going 5 for 5 vs SEOSU and 2 for 4 in the win against ECU.

THE MEN IN THE MASK 
Dalton Smith and Anthony Ferrante have split time behind the plate for Newman. Smith (SR/Norman, OK) is 16 for 48 with 17 RBI's this season and Ferrante (SR/Midlothian, OK) is batting .294 in 68 at bats with 4 doubles. 

ON THE MOUND
Garrett VanDeventer is 5-2 in 9 appearances in 2023 with 36 K's. He'll look to build upon his 2022 season where he threw for 4 wins, 41 K's, and 1 complete game in 70.1 innings pitched. The senior out of Arkansas City got the win in his first start of the season at SNU and his 2nd win in the 2-0 3 hit complete game shutout vs Rogers State, his most impressive start to date. He went 7 innings strong only allowing 2 runs in his outing vs Washburn. He helped keep the Griffon's bats cold in their 10-run victory over MWSU. He threw 8 innings of 3 hit and 1 run baseball vs UCO 2 weeks ago to earn the win 5-1. No. 15 leads the team with 56 innings pitched.

Asher Finke is 2-4 in 8 starts this season. Finke will try and top his 7-2 stat line from last season where he held opponents to a .258 average with 62 K's while throwing a complete game in 78.1 innings of work. He got the win in game 2 of the series vs Rogers State, allowing just 2 earned runs and 5 hits in 5 innings of work. He has struck out 40 batters in 36.2 innings of work.

Nate Denniston is 2-3 in 8 starts this season, earning the win in 4 innings of pitching in a 7 inning win over SNU in the first series of the season. Denniston was 5-7 a season ago with 68 K's. No. 20 struck out 9 batters in his outing vs Minot State. He has pitched the 2nd most innings on the team this season (48.1). and leads the team in strikeouts with 41.

Jaret Granger has appeared in 11 games in relief with 13 K's in 14 innings pitched.

Braden Oberle has appeared in 5 games with 4 K's in 4.2 innings.

Andrew Prieve has struck out 21 batters and has earned the lone save for NU in 13 appearances. He struck out the side to end the game vs Southwestern College. He earned his 1st win of the season against Southeastern Oklahoma State on April 4th.

Colby Wilson has recorded 25 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. Wilson has appeared in 12 games, starting 6 of them. He pitched 5 innings and earned his first win of the season in Tuesday's win over Fort Hays State.

Lance Elsen has appeared in 9 games, recording 9 strikeouts 

Ian Lecki has 26 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work. He is 3-1 on the season.

AROUND THE HORN
Jenner Steele leads the team in batting average as well as leads in home runs. Steele is the Newman Jets all time home run leader in the NCAAD2 era. He has been on a tear lately, moving his average to .414.

Don't be fooled by his freshman status, second basemen Jack Kiser has started in 33 games this season with a .304 batting average and a .442 OBP.

Shortstop Zack Stewart has 35 RBI's in 34 games. The senior hit a home run in every game vs Rogers State to bring his total to 6 on the season at the time. He hit his 7th home run of the season in game 2 of the series two weeks ago vs MWSU. After his 2 home run performance vs SEOSU he tied the single season home run record with Jenner Steele.

Third baseman Jason Schneider is 45 for 135 (.333) in 35 starts. He has hit 4 home runs, 4 triples, and 7 doubles this season.

EARNING MIAA RECOGNITION
Jake Angelico became the first MIAA Hitter of The Week award winner in Newman history. The senior earned MIAA Hitter of The Week in week 1 for his 6 hit, 10 RBI performance in the opening series at Southern Nazarene. MIAA HITTER OF THE WEEK 

Garrett VanDeventer decided he wanted in on the awards too. The Senior threw a 3 hit complete game shutout over then No. 21 Rogers State, putting a stop to the Hillcats 8 game win streak and giving the Jets their best win of the season. He was voted MIAA Pitcher of The Week for the performance, the first in Newman Baseball history. MIAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK
VanDeventer earned MIAA week 8 Pitcher of The Week this past Tuesday after his 8 inning, 3 hit and 1 run performance vs UCO in the 5-1 win. MIAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK (2)

The Jets conclude their season series and look to go for the sweep against Fort Hays State this upcoming Tuesday.
