In its first series of the season at No. 4 St. Mary's, freshman Jerrod Flax led Newman with a .250 (2-8) batting average. The Jets feature a pitching staff that is 18 players deep, 10 of which saw action against the Rattlers last weekend. Senior Ashton Hoffman and redshirt-freshman Tyler Rosenboom led the charge against St. Mary's, each boasting a 0.00 ERA in two innings of action.

Scouting St. Edward's...
The Hilltoppers graze into Friday's series opener with an overall record of 1-2, and a 1-1 mark in Heartland Conference play. St. Ed's opened the season with a split against Arkansas-Fort Smith, and are coming off of a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers are led by Ransom LaLonde, who is hitting .500 (4-8), with an on-base percentage of .600. The pitching staff is anchored by junior Matt Davis, who fanned five batters in his first start against UAFS.

Last Time Out...
Newman was swept in its first Heartland Conference series at No. 4 St. Mary's last weekend (4-3, 9-0, and 4-1).

Game 1:
The Jets gave up an early home run to M.P. Cokinos in the bottom of the second, but tied the game up at 1-1  in the top of the third, after David Longmore's single drove in Tanner Vinson from second. Newman gained its only lead of the ball game when Tyler Hancock scored on a St. Mary's error, 2-1. In their next at bat, the Rattlers struck back, plating three runners, two of which came off of Cokinos second home run of the game to re-gain a 4-2 edge. The Jets threatened in the fifth after Terrell Brown scored on a Ruben Marrero single, but Newman couldn't muster another rally over the final two innings as St. Mary's handed Newman the 4-3 loss.

Game 2:
Starter Brandon Droge was chased out of the game before he could even record an out in the opening frame, giving up six earned runs off of five walks, two hits, and a hit-batsman. Tyler Hancock an Jerrod Flax recorded the only two hits for the Jets, as the Rattlers rolled to a 9-0 victory.

Game 3:
St. Mary's took advantage of two Newman errors to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Starters Jacob Furr and Skye Severns held the two offenses at bay, as the two teams combined for just two hits over the next five innings, with the Rattlers holding a 1-0 lead. Corey Cowan opened up the top of the seventh with a double, forcing Severns out of the game. Cowan advanced to third on a Shannon Engroff sacrifice bunt, and Jarrod Flax plated Cowan with an RBI single up the middle. After seven innings, the Jets were tied with the fourth-ranked team in the nation, 1-1.

The tie was short lived, as senior reliever Ashton Hoffman was tagged for three runs on two hits, and a Jet error, and took the 4-1 lead in which they would win by.
