The Match-Up
About the Jets...
Newman will make its home debut against OPSU Friday Feb. 17 at McCarthy Field after starting the season off with seris' against both St. Mary's and St. Edward's in Texas. The 2012 Jets feature a nice balance of returners and newcomers, with 16 returning letterwinners and 15 newcomers.

Against St. Edward's the Jets'  Corey Cowan led the Newman offense with a .300 average while Terrell Brown notched two RBIs. The Jets feature a pitching staff that is 18 players deep, six of which saw action against the Hilltoppers.

Scouting Oklahoma Panhandle State...
The Aggies plow into this weekend's games in search of their first win. They carry a 0-6 overall record and a 0-3 Heartland Conference mark. OPSU comes in off a three game sweep by Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas, losing 3-2, 9-8, 4-1 to the Dustdevils. The Aggies are led offensively by starter Thomas McGuckin who owns a .412 average with seven singles and a double. Defensivley OPSU is led by first baseman Art Knapp who has compiled 40 putouts so far this season. From the mound the Aggies' Daulton Perry owns a team-best .195 batting average against with a 5.84 ERA though 12.1 innings pitched.

Last Time Out...
Newman (2-4, 2-4 Heartland) won two of three against Heartland Conference opponent St. Edward's (2-4, 2-3 Heartland) last weekend in Austin, Texas.

Game 1: St. Edward's 4, Newman 1
The Jets scored jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Terrell Brown reached second on a wild pitch then found home after a David Longmore single to center field. The Hilltoppers responded in the fourth inning after getting a runner on base via a Newman error, St. Edward's used a bunt single followed by a sacrifice bunt to move their runner to third before sending him home on a ground-out to shortstop. After four the game was tied 1-1. The Hilltoppers went on to notch three more runs in the fifth inning, forcing starter Kyle Burkhardt out of the game and taking a 4-1 lead. The Jets' Griffin Campbell came in in relief of Burkhardt and refused to give up any more runs, but the the Jets' offense couldn't score and Newman fell, 4-1.

Game 2: Newman 3, St. Edward's 1
Newman plated all its runs in the second inning. Corey Cowan opened the inning with a double down the left-field line then sprinted to third off a Jerrod Flax single to left. Flax stole second and Cowan scored the Jets' first run on a Hilltopper throwing error. After a Dylan Monroe four-pitch walk followed by a St. Edward's fielding error Newman had the bases loaded for Terrell Brown. Brown hit a double to left field which sent Flax and Monroe home and gave the Jets a 3-0 advantage. The Hilltoppers managed to score their lone run in the third but Newman's Brandon Droge held them in check, striking out seven. Gage Daniels cloed the game for Newman and sealed the Jets 3-1 win.

Game 3: Newman 2, St. Edward's 0
The game remained tied until the fourth inning when the Jet offense made its move. David Longmore singled to shortstop and moved to third after Ruben Marrero reached first on a fielding error by the Hilltoppers' third baseman. A second fielding error, this time by the first baseman sent both Longmore and Marrero home  and gave the Jets a 2-0 lead with five to play. The Newman pitching and defense took over from their. Starter Jacob Furr allowed just five hits in four innings and reliever allowed just one hit and gave up one walk, securing the 2-0 win for the Jets.
