The Match-Up
About the Jets...
The Jets will look  to win their their fourth-consecutive Heartland Conference series on Friday, when Texas-Permian Basin visits McCarthy Field. Newman has won four of its first five series' against Heartland Conference opponents. As a team, the Jets are hitting. 222 with 21 extra base hits thus far in the season. Newman has a team fielding-percentage of .962, compared to .956 of its opponents. The Jets' pitching staff has accounted for 80 strike outs, while only walking 34 opponents.

Scouting Texas-Permian Basin...
The Falcons fly into the weekend's series with a record of 1-11, and a 1-8 mark in Heartland Conference action. UTPB is led offensively by junior Mike Briseno. The Ohlone Junior College transfer is batting .300 on the season, driving in a team-high four RBI's.The Falcons' pitching staff is led by Travis Wilcox's 2.50 ERA. Wilcox is averaging one strikeout per inning pitched.

Last Time Out...
The Newman baseball team won its third Heartland Conferece series of the season on Saturday, defeating Texas A&M-International in the first and third games, 2-1 and 4-1 at Jorge Haynes Field in Laredo, Texas. Texas A&M-International defeated the Jets 5-3 in Game 2.

Game 1:
-Texas A&M-International struck first in the bottom of the third inning, with an RBI single to left field.
-The Jets rallied in the next half inning, when Terrell Brown reached by an error on the left fielder. Brown advanced to second, following a David Longmore sacrifice bunt. Ruben Marrero followed Longmore by being hit by a pitch. Tyler Hancock's RBI single drove in Brown, and advanced Marrero to third. Corey Cowan drove Marrero in on a sacrifice fly to give the Jets a 2-1 edge.
-Kyle Burkhardt shut the Dustdevils down, pitching 6.1 innings, striking out six batters. Jace Moore and Gage Daniels preserved the 2-1 win by retiring the last two batters.

Game 2:
-Newman came out swinging in the top of the first. After a Tanner Vinson ground-out, Terrell Brown and David Longmore walked to bring up Ruben Marrero. Brown and Longmore both stole bases, to put themselves in scoring position. Marrero reached on an error by the third baseman. Tyler Hancock scored Brown on an RBI ground-out to give Newman a 1-0 lead.
-TAMIU came back in the bottom of the third, when Sean Smedley scored on an RBI ground-out to Hancock.
-The Jets retaliated half an inning later, when Marrero led off the frame with a single to right field. Hancock's bunt-single advanced Marrero to second. Corey Cowan hit a sacrifice fly to advance Marrero and Hancock to third and second. Jerrod Flax's RBI single scored Marrero, but Hancock was caught in the base path to end the inning.
-Both teams scored runs in the fourth to make the ball game 3-2.
-The Dustdevils put a three-spot up in the bottom of the sixth, and Danny Navarro shut the Jets down from the bullpen en route to a 5-3 victory for TAMIU.

Game 3:
-Kyle Okumura drove Ruben Marrero in on a single to center field to give the Jets the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
-In the top of the fifth, Jerrod Flax put himself in scoring position with a single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. David Longmore advanced Flax to third on a ground out, and Flax scored on another wild pitch for the 2-0 Newman advantage.
-The Jets tacked on two more runs in the seventh, when Corey Cowan drove in Tanner Vinson and David Longmore with an RBI double.
-TAMIU scored one run in the eighth, but the Newman bullpen wrapped up the series, clinching a 4-1 win.
